Theory 10: Elements Are Fixed and Cannot Change Identity, Silver Cannot Become Gold, Copper Cannot Become Iron

Last updated: 2025-10-24 20:02:11

Chemical elements are substances made of identical atoms, and each element has a fixed number of protons in its atomic nucleus. This number, known as the atomic number, determines the identity of each element. For example, silver (Ag) has atomic number 47, gold (Au) has atomic number 79, copper (Cu) has atomic number 29, and iron (Fe) has atomic number 26.

Changing an element's identity would mean changing the number of protons in its nucleus, a process that is impossible under ordinary conditions. Converting one element into another requires nuclear reactions, such as fusion or fission, which occur only under special conditions, such as inside stars or in advanced laboratories using particle accelerators.

Therefore, under ordinary conditions, silver cannot become gold, and copper cannot become iron. Such transformations require changes to the atomic nucleus itself, which occur only rarely in nature and demand extremely high amounts of energy.
