Theory 27: If Existence Did Not Exist, There Would Be Only Darkness
1. The philosophical view: being and non-being
In philosophy, being refers to presence and reality, while non-being refers to the absence of any reality. Philosophers such as Hegel and Sartre held that being is the precondition for any awareness, light, or meaning; without being, there is only non-being. Darkness, in this sense, can symbolize non-being: a space empty of any light, life, or meaning.
2. The religious view: divine light and creation
In the Abrahamic religions, God is regarded as the source of light and the creator of existence. The Quran states that God is the light of the heavens and the earth (24:35), and the Book of Genesis states that God said, let there be light, and there was light (1:3). In Islamic mysticism, existence is regarded as the self-disclosure of divine light, and Rumi wrote, in essence, that the light of truth arrived and the darkness of non-being was overcome, for darkness is nothing but the absence of light.
3. The scientific view: the universe and energy
According to the Big Bang theory, the universe began from an infinitely dense and energetic point; before this event, nothing existed. After the Big Bang, energy and matter came into being, and the physical universe took shape; without this event, the universe would have remained in absolute darkness and void. Light is a necessary condition for life; without stars and sunlight, the Earth would remain in absolute darkness and cold, and life would be impossible.
4. Conclusion
Philosophically, being means presence and reality, while non-being means the absence of any reality or light. Religiously, God is the source of light and being, and without Him the universe would fall into darkness and nothingness. Scientifically, the material universe and light originate from the Big Bang, and without it there would be only darkness and void.
A final note: this proposition is not only a philosophical or religious statement, but aligns with scientific findings as well. As Nietzsche wrote, in essence, even a single small candle can illuminate an entire world in the darkness. Existence and light, then, not only stand opposed to darkness, they are what give the universe its meaning and life.
