Theory 8: Since God Is Eternal and Breathed of His Own Spirit to Create Humanity, Humanity Too Is Eternal

This argument, that humanity is eternal because it carries a portion of the divine spirit, has deep roots in Islamic theology, existential philosophy, and mysticism. It can be examined from several angles.

1. The divine origin of the soul in the Quran and Hadith
On the creation of humanity, the Quran states that when God fashioned the human form and breathed into it of His own spirit, the angels were commanded to bow before it (Quran 15:29). This breathing of the spirit indicates that the human soul is part of a divine command, and since God is eternal, this gift is understood as imperishable as well.

A well-known hadith qudsi relates that God said: I was a hidden treasure, and I loved to be known, so I created creation, a saying that points to a purposeful creation of humanity as an everlasting being.

2. The philosophy of the soul's immortality
Avicenna (Ibn Sina), in his Treatise on the Soul, held that the soul is an immaterial substance that does not perish with the death of the body, since it is not material and therefore not subject to physical decay. Mulla Sadra's theory of substantial motion holds that the human soul continues to move along a path of perfection toward eternity.

3. Mysticism: humanity as God's vicegerent
A well-known hadith states that whoever knows himself knows his Lord, suggesting that to know the soul is to know the divine dimension within the human being, a dimension that is inherently eternal. Rumi, in the Masnavi, writes of dying and being reborn, of tears turning to laughter, of attaining an everlasting state, verses that speak to the soul's transformation from perishability to permanence.

4. Modern scientific support
The law of conservation of energy states that energy is never destroyed, only transformed. If the soul is understood as a kind of intelligent energy, one could say it transforms rather than ceases to exist. Some physicists, such as David Bohm, have proposed a holographic view of the cosmos in which every part contains the whole; perhaps the human soul, too, is a part of an eternal whole.

5. Conclusion: humanity's eternity as the purpose of creation
If humanity carries the divine spirit, then death is only a passage from one realm to another, and worldly life is a preparation for the flowering of that eternal soul. This view finds the philosophical answer to the meaning of life in the journey toward the divine. As Hafez expressed it in essence, the Most High granted the soul eternity, for this celestial abode has neither door nor wall. In other words, humanity is not merely dust, but an eternal guest on a journey that began before time and continues beyond it. Is this not the very secret of creation?
